Sabelle - Sabelle (1997)

Sabelle is now better known as Sabelle Breer, a songwriter and producer who has worked with Avril Lavigne and Ryan Cabrera, among others. But before 1997, she was mainly employed as a back-up singer. This was supposed to change with her self-titled debut. Indeed, with good looks, a silky voice, a great album cover and the support of a major label, Sabelle could not fail. Yet she did. Perhaps she was too generic, almost a mix of Taylor Dayne and Mariah Carey, talented and attractive, but not a standout. Perhaps it was that her music, produced by herself with hot R&B producers Rex Rideout and Doug Rasheed, was a little too black for white audiences, and she herself was a little too white for black audiences. Whatever the case, neither of her singles "Where Did The Love Go" or "One O'Clock" garnered much success (the video to the latter was included on the enhanced CD), and it appeared that she disappeared. Thank goodness for the internet, as now we know that she's actually still creative, working and well. Her album was a pleasant detour, and had it been released a couple years later, may have actually have been a hit.

And speaking of covers,I'll take Sabelle's version of Love Bites over the Def Leppard original!
