The Beatmasters - Anywayawanna (1990)

The Beatmasters consisted of Brits Richard Walmsley, Amanda Glanfield and Paul Carter. The three got together in the late 1980s with hopes of being a dance music production and songwriting team. Their production for acts like The Cookie Crew and remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode got the attention of Brit dance label Rhythm King, who wanted them as an act in their own right. Their first single, "Rock Da House", which featured The Cookie Crew, was an instant top ten hit in the UK. Each of their successive singles, "Burn It Up", "Warm Love" and "Hey DJ (I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing)" were also British top ten hits. The last one featured Betty Boo, formerly of rap duo She Rockers, and jump-started her career as a successful solo artist. The Beatmasters were considered among the forerunners of the hip-house sound, and their success in the UK got the attention of Sire Records in the US, who picked up their album for North American distribution. Though "Hey DJ" had some dance club success, the Beatmasters sound obviously did not translate overseas and they were mostly ignored in North America. They did manage to release another album in the UK entitled Life & Soul, and the sound was more straight-forward hip hop and acid jazz. But it and it's singles were much less successful and the album was not distributed internationally. The trio soon ceased as a recording act. They continued on as successful remixers, however, and after Walmsley left, Glanfield and Carter continued on as a duo and had success as producers, most notably with Betty Boo on Girls Aloud's debut album. For me their most exciting work was in 2008 on one of my fave acts Helicopter Girl's awesome album Metropolitan. It is proof that they have managed to successfully adapt with the times.

  2. This and Baby Ford's "ooo...the world of Baby Ford" were my albums of 1990. Both were on Rhythm King, distributed by Sire in the US. I recently scored this CD and the CD single for "Who's in the House" featuring Merlin MC from a third-party seller on Amazon. They released one more US single in 1991, "Dunno What it is/The Whisper" before limiting themselves to remix work for the likes of Pet Shop Boys and Moby. They are still very active.

    2. Thank you so much. I had a copy of this on cassette many years ago. As such I don't feel any guilt taking the MP3 you've kindly uploaded! I listened to it while on my paper round and it ignited a love for dance music that I still have today at age 43!!!
