é on another missing and mysterious pop footnote, Icy Blu. Indeed, any search to find the whereabouts of Ms. Blu is futile. In fact, aside from many inquiries by other curious pop fans about Icy and her albums continued presence on sites like eBay, you would have no idea the woman ever existed. There aren't even any old promo articles to give any indication what her real name was, where she came from, and where she thought she was going. All we know is that she was one of the few white female rappers (and probably the most ridiculed) to get a major label deal. And like Misa and Tairrie B, she lost the deal soon after her album appeared and flopped. It is a fun little pop-rap treat, though, very easy on the ears and wonderfully danceable,. It taps into Salt N' Pepa's "Push It" era, especially the lead single "Pump It", while "He's Got It Goin' On" is an obvious response to Tone Loc. Icy's raps are sweet, not street, and the music is very pop. Icy, we barely knew ye! Please get in touch. Your fans demand it!

If you google the slightly different spelling of Laurel Yurchik, you can find a 1991 article from the Chicago Sun Times in which she explains that Pump It is "not a sexual song".
I hope some resourceful person can find the whereabouts of this mystery girl.

DeleteMe too. I was also 12-13 years old when she actually came to my middle school and performed. It was so cool, got to shake her hand and everything. Loved the song "I Wanna Be Your Girl". I am so sorry for everything she's gone through. I pray that she's doing better and had less drama in her life. I just remember though I'm sure it was for publicity, but for her to go to a middle school and perform for us kids, that was a nice thing to do. She has a lot of kids, and a daddy-man that I *THINK* was trying to deal drugs and hence went to the slammer prior to her, too, so he wasn't around to take care of her properly. She had multiple mega-tickets for various moving violations and no inspections, no insurance I think, etc etc etc, snowballing hell, so I think that's what finally sent her to the slammer, too many tickets or some such crap. She seemed to have a lot of happy kids and a happy life otherwise, so CHEERS TO ICY and I hope she pulled it all together!!!

ReplyDeleteLaurel Yurchick lives in Austin Texas. & she previously worked at Goodwill up until the end of last year. Her parole/probation was amended & she now spends her weekends in jail as a part of what she must comply with. Her charge is for MAN/DEL CS PG 1>=4G <200G. Which means manufacturing & delivering a controlled substance. PG1, stands for methamphetamines. The amount was above 4 & below 200 grams. She has been dealing with the drug addiction & court & custody battles. She definitely wasn't clean that long ago (the past year), but maybe now that she is spending every weekend in jail, will leave no other option but to get clean. Can only wish the best & for her to get it together. 39 years old, it's about time to grow up & take responsibility. Prayers & best wishes her way for recovery from the addiction & for her to prosper & succeed.

Our local radio station use to play the crap out of "I Wanna be Your Girl." I read recently that it barely made its way into the top 40 in the US. I was amazed to read that based in the many times I heard it played back then. At the time I thought it was for sure top 10. Well anyway it is top 10 in my book because I do have a few of your jams on my iPhone. If that's the case it means your songs are part of the soundtrack of my life. I'm 43 today and I'm still in love with your voice to this day. Also I still have a crush on you as much as I did back then even though I didn't even know what you looked like back then. Your singing/rap style is yours and cannot be duplicated by anyone. You definitely owned it. Glad to hear you're doing well. Also Shannon Lucio, stop being down on such a well loved talent. Not cool to toot your own horn about how well you're doing and b down on others. It's like those people who have shitty things to say about videos on YouTube and other people bring up the question, "if you don't like it then why are you even watching it." I have the same question for Shannon and any other keyboard commandos. If you dislike Laurel so much then why do you go out of your way to come here and comment?
