The Boomtang Boys / Boomtang - Greatest Hits Volume One (1999) & Wet (2002) DOUBLE POST!!

The Boomtang Boys, or Boomtang, as they are now known, have been very involved and essential to the dance music scene in Canada. Originating in Toronto in 1990 and consisting of Tony & Paul Grace and Rob DeBoer, they established themselves first in the UK as a record label. After releasing several 12" singles of their own, they expanded into producing and releasing tracks for other artists. They also tried their hand at remixing, and one of their first remixes was for JLM, whose album was previously featured on the Isle. Their remixing skills would continue to be highly sought after throughout the 1990s. They were experts at transforming pop and rock songs into dancefloor hits, transforming tracks by the likes of Corey Hart, Bif Naked and Sky. However, it was their production work on "A Deeper Shade Of Love" by Canadian artist Camille in 1994 that cemented their status as Canada's premier dance and pop production team, as the song won a Juno. They would soon be in-demand producers, working with many acts including previous Isle postees Carol Medina, Oval Emotion, Monik Garo and Kim Esty. In fact, they enlisted Esty's help when recording their inevitable debut album, the cheekily titled Greatest Hits Volume One. Esty took lead vocals on three tracks, which were also the album's singles (and which were also featured on her album posted here), while the rest of the album featured a variety of other vocalists. The album featured mostly poppy eurohouse remakes, including tracks like Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time", T-Rex's "Bang A Gong", Hot Butter's "Popcorn" and Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself". But it was the Esty-led, Aqua-esque single "Squeeze Toy" that set the Canadian charts on fire, and got attention around the world. It would take three more years before they released their next album. In the meantime Paul Grace left the group, and they dropped the 'Boys' from their name. They reemerged with a deeper, funkier, more soulful house sound. They also used more soulful vocalists, the main one being Divine Earth Essence, who would emerge several years later as one of Canada's premier soul singers, Divine Brown. None of the singles from the album made a significant impact, however, so the boys have went back to producing a variety of acts, as well as recording themselves under various other monikers.
