Angie Giles - Surface (1993) & Stone Prayers (1996)

Thanks to a request from Giba, I present you with Angie Giles' only two solo albums.  Much thanks to the kind people who saw these on my want list and shared them with me. Funny enough, it was already my next planned post.  This just put a fire under my butt. And since I have little time for the blog lately, it's just as well that I can't find much info on the lady.  I do know that she was born in the UK, but has connections to Perth, Australia. Her big break was in 1988 singing back-up on British singer-songwriter Julia Fordham's debut album.  In 1991, pairing with Fordham collaborator Michael Moran as The Main Thing, she released a remake of Fordham's "My Lover's Keeper".  That same year Fordham recorded a song the duo wrote, "Melt". Soon Giles moved on to a solo career after being signed to Island Records. In 1992 she released the single "Submerge".  This was how I heard of her because I came across the 12" single many years ago, which features remixes by Driza Bone and Perfecto.  The song was an underground club hit, with its soulful and almost deep house sound. The less club bound "Silent Way" was released soon after, but to little fanfare.  Her album Surface followed in 1993, but was only released in Japan due to the lukewarm reception of the singles.  It also included "My Lover's Keeper" and her version of "Melt". She also did a feature vocal on the song "Abracadabra" by Dreams 2 Reality that same year. Following this, she continued to work with Fordham and also did back up vocals for other artists, including Isle postee Eve Gallagher. Then, in 1996, she released her second album, Stone Prayers. It was also a Japan only release, and the vibe was much less soul and much more folk. After this she went back to backing vocals again, most notably appearing on Atomic Kitten's hit "Whole Again". In 2002 she did another feature vocal on the house song "Say You'll Be Mine" by Mimosa.  Moving to the US, she hooked up with her nephew Pat Giles (aka Hiro?) and formed the duo The Life Project. They released two albums, Life Project in 2005 and LP2: The Cut + The Mix in 2008.  Their sound was very chillwave and drum n' bass.  Since then it's anyone's guess what Angie is up to, which is a shame, since she has an amazing deep and soulful voice.  In my opinion, her albums were not the right platform for her voice.  They are somewhat snoozy, and I think she would have been better served to belt out on house songs.  Perhaps this is how she will emerge in the future, as the full on house diva she deserves to be.

UPDATE:  Angie herself wrote and had the following to say.  An honour to have you visit and comment, Angie!  Feel free to fill us in on the rest of your career!

"Wow! Fame at last. Famous for not being famous! Thanks for the amazingly accurate account of at least part of my 35 year career, well done you! By the way, both Life Project albums are still available on iTunes - just sayin'😉. My name is Angie Giles and I approve this message xox."

Dee Fredrix - Grace (1993)

Thanks to a request from Marco, I located the one and only album from Britain's Dee Fredrix.  Though I didn't realize it until now, Dee more commonly went by name Dee Lewis (though her maiden name is actually Fredericks) and she was mentioned on the Isle previously thanks to a post on her sister Shirley Lewis. Like Shirley, Dee did a lot of background work until she joined her older sisters Shirley and soul/disco diva Linda to form Lewis (aka The Lewis Sisters), who released five non-charting pop singles in 1986/87. Linda originally changed her last name from Fredericks to Lewis in tribute to soul singer Barbara Lewis, and her sisters soon followed. Dee was also featured in 1986 on two singles by Stock Aitken Waterman's bizarre bossa nova collective Mondo Kané and the charity single "Give, Give, Give" by Dance Aid.  While continuing to perform backing vocals for a wide variety of artists like Kylie Minogue and Donna Summer (thanks to the SAW connection), she also managed to release several pop singles of her own on Mercury as Dee Lewis, including three top 100 UK Singles: "Stuck On Love" (#90 in 1987 and recharting in 1988 at #95), a remake of the Emotions' "Best Of My Love" (#47 in 1988) and "Double Standard" (#89 in 1989).  Having had minimal success on the charts, she returned to backing vocals and regrouped.  In 1993 she reemerged with a new name, taking her real last name and changing the spelling to something shorter and catchier.  She also had a new, much more soulful sound.  Her first single was the ballad "And So I Will Wait For You", which hit #56 on the UK charts.  The follow-up was a house track, "Dirty Money", which managed to reach #74 on the UK pop charts, but also become a club hit thanks to remixes by Satoshi Tomiie. I have this 12" single and always loved this song, but until now, this was the only song I had ever heard by Dee.  I am glad to be able to hear more, and there are a couple other housey tracks on the album.  A promo of remixes of "Whatever It Takes" was also released, and Dee released one other non-album single in 1994, "Live My Life", but neither were hits. With solo stardom just out of reach, Dee went back to session singing.  Her Twitter account indicates that she is still singing and songwriting, especially for film soundtracks.  Hit her up there or on Facebook should you wish to know more.  Perhaps you could also ask her if a Lewis Sisters reunion is in the cards (fingers crossed). :)

Nu Civilization - Nu Civilization (1993)

Emerging from a very modest upbringing in Brooklyn, Glenn Toby began his career in music in the burgeoning genre of hip hop. Known as Mr. Sweety "G", in the early 1980's he released a couple of underground rap hits, "At The Place To Be" and "We Want To Get Down". By the mid-80's he'd moved on to house music, most notably doing featured vocals for producer Winston Jones, recording under the name Cultural Vibe. Though he had dabbled in hip hop production, Toby's first notable foray into house music production was on the 1987 song "I Can Tell" by MSG, for which he also performed lead vocals.  Over the next few years he released more house tracks under aliases like Private House, The Klub and Kustom Made.  But it was the 1990 release of "Wake Up (Shay-Ama)" under the moniker Nu Civilization that got the attention of the world.  Released on Toby's own label Permanent Records, it started as a local club hit but blew up over the next couple of years, especially here in Canada.  UK label Vinyl Solution signed Toby to an album deal, and the album was released in the UK three years later (and on SPG Music Productions in Canada).  The album featured Toby on vocals on most songs, though he also included several other vocalists, most notably club divas Tafuri, Channelle and Chandra Simmons. While "Wake Up" was a huge club hit in Canada, the follow up singles, "When Will I Be Free," "You Are" and "Destiny", met with less success in Canada and elsewhere.  Over the next couple of years Toby deserted the Nu Civilization name but produced and recorded a few more songs, and he also co-wrote songs with Sybil, including her minor 1993 hit "You're The Love Of My Life".  In 1998 he put music aside when he founded the Book Bank Foundation, which provides tutoring and education in order to encourage literacy in inner city youth.  He then formed Glenn Toby Enterprises, a marketing, management and business development company with a focus on the entertainment industry, which he still runs to this day. Now, instead of making music himself, he's helping others get their music out there.

David Morales & The Bad Yard Club - The Program (1993)

After I posted the Arthur Baker & The Backbeat Disciples post, I was reminded of another album from around the same era that was fronted by a legendary producer and featured several vocalists.  It was David Morales & The Bad Yard Club, but I only had it on cassette and hadn't listened to it in decades.  I immediately found the CD online, and here it is! David Morales was born and bred in a rough section of Brooklyn and frequented the New York club scene as a teen, becoming a DJ in the late 70s, most notably at Paradise Garage. His success as a DJ led to his being asked to remix several singles, his first being married synth-pop duo The Zummos' "An Obsession (Over You)" in 1985.  From there he was in demand as a remixer, remixing an endless stream of pop and R&B singles (including remixes for several Isle postees like Pam Russo, Sequel, Adventures Of Stevie V, Nerissa, Nayobe, Alison Limerick, Jamie J. Morgan, Slam Slam, Ana, Blue Pearl, Temper Temper, Ya Kid K, Malaika, Eve Gallagher, India, and, yes, even Arthur Baker & The Backbeat Disciples), with his first remix for a major artist being Whitney Houston's "Love Will Save The Day" in 1988. In 1987 he also began making his own music, joining up with other future remix and production legends Chep Nunez, Robert Clivilles and David Cole to form 2 Puerto Ricans, A Black Man And A Dominican, whose single "Do It Properly" was a huge underground club hit. But it wasn't until 1993 that he decided to use his own name to release original music.  Like Arthur Baker, he chose to add a group name after his name, branding his supporting players, producers and vocalists The Bad Yard Club. He signed to Mercury and released the single "Gimme Luv (Eenie Meenie Miny Mo)" featuring Jamaican ragga vocalist Papa San.  The song became a huge club hit, eventually hitting #1 on the Billboard Dance chart.  The album soon followed, and it maintained the ragga house sound introduced in the first single.  The title track, also featuring Papa San, was released next and hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Dance chart as well.  While the next single, "Sunshine", failed to chart, its follow-up, "In De Ghetto", hit #3 on the Billboard Dance chart in 1994 and is probably the best remembered single from the album.  (It was re-released in 1996 featuring the original vocalist, Delta Bennett, as well as house diva Crystal Waters.) It would be the last single from the album and from David Morales & The Bad Yard Club.  (Of particular interest to pop fans, the track "Forever Luv" is the first song to feature the vocals of future pop superstar (in Europe, at least) Anastacia.) Morales went on to even huger, superstar success in the following years as a producer, remixer and artist.  He was nominated for Grammys three years in a row - as a producer on Mariah Carey's Daydream in 1996, and for Remixer Of The Year in 1997 and 1998, the latter year for which he won.  This was helped by the success that same year of "Needin' U", a mostly instrumental house track that he released as David Morales Presents The Face, which hit #1 on the Billboard Dance chart and #8 on the UK Pop chart. He released it again in 2001, as "Needin' U II", this time featuring vocals by Isle postee Juliet Roberts, and it again hit #1 on the Billboard Dance chart and #11 on the UK Pop chart.  He has since released many successful singles using his own name and as part of various groups, the biggest being "Higher" by Moca in 2000, and also released two albums using just his own name, 2 Worlds Collide in 2004 and Changes in 2012.  He has produced, remixed and released a lot less since then, as he dedicates most of his time touring the world as a highly sought after DJ, thus returning to his first love.

Nerissa - Nerissa (1993)

Recently I rewatched the controversial Ken Russell film Whore, and on second viewing, I liked the movie much less, but noticed the background music, which included some house cuts that I had never heard before.  A bit of searching revealed that the songs were by artists who were signed to Select Records, one of whom was Nerissa.  The name was familiar and I recalled that I had the cassingle of Nerissa's funky remake of the Dramatics' hit ballad "In The Rain".  I then remembered that it indicated on that cassingle that the song came from Nerissa's self-titled album.  I had never managed to find that album - until now!  Nerissa Vitello is a New York based singer.  I can't find much on her background, other than that she was a music/voice major at Laguardia School of the Arts in the 1980s.  This led to her house song from the Whore soundtrack, "Tell Me All Your Secrets", which was Nerissa's first single in 1990 on Active Records, a sublabel of Select.  Her next single, "In The Rain", didn't appear until 1993, with her self-titled album soon following.  "In The Rain" was produced by house music legend Todd Terry, but instead of being an upbeat house number, it had a laid back R&B vibe.  The remix, featuring rapper Ski, got some attention.  But the single wasn't the best representation of the album, which was mostly upbeat house tunes with a few slower R&B numbers, including a remake of Randy Crawford's classic "Almaz".  Her next single was the house stomper "Stars", which returned her to dance floors, and the song has popped up on house compilations ever since.  But it failed to reach past the dance market, and no other singles were released, though her track "The Cure", another more downbeat Todd Terry production, did pop up on the House Party 3 soundtrack. It seems that since then Nerissa has continued to perform, as her StarNow profile indicates appearances in supporting roles in film and music, and there are also a couple of recent Youtube videos of her performing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at private functions.  Let's hope she hits the studio again soon!

Gloo Girls - Attention Shoppers (1993)

Time for a change of pace - a little punk pop, and a rarity at that.  Everything you need to know about Gloo Girls you can find on their Facebook page.  The edited version is as follows:  The band was formed in 1991 in New York City's East Village by Beatrice “Patty Gloo” Giovaniello and Karen “Sage LeWho?” LeSage.  Patty owned a clothing store called Gloo People and Sage, a clothing designer, collaborated with her on fashion.  They were dubbed Gloo Girls and soon moved towards music.  Patty played bass and Karen played guitar, but she soon learned to play drums instead, and they recruited Georgia "Miss Georgia Peach" Connelly to play guitar.  In 1992 they released the single "Yo Blondie / Barbie U.S.A." on an indie punk label out of California.  Soon after, Georgia split and the ever-ambitious Patty and Sage moved their business to Soho, where they also began selling vintage furniture and running an all-female moving company, Amazon Movers.  The moving company, along with their glamorous 50s/60s inspired look, got them media attention (they were even featured in the National Enquirer and on American Journal).  They became a sensation in New York and finally recorded and released an album in 1993 on pioneering label Celluloid.  After going through a slew of guitar players, all christened "Guitara", they found one that stuck, Nicole "Guitara Seven" Kennedy, and they toured the US for some time before eventually calling it quits.  Since they split, Beatrice has worked as an interior designer in New York, Karen is an artist in Connecticut, and Nicole teaches and records music in Estonia(!!).  Though they were influenced by other punky pop groups like Lunachicks and Redd Kross, their sound was uniquely their own, very 60s girl group meets surfer rock, with an edge.  The sound would be revived in the late 90s/early 00s by groups like Chicks On Speed and Le Tigre, though with a more electronic flavour.  In fact, it was my love for those groups that made me seek out Gloo Girls, and I'm glad that I found them.  I think you will be too.

Sample This! - Sample This! (1993)

Sample This! consisted of musician/producer Anton Pukshansky and vocalist Traedonya.  Before joining together for the funk-jazz project, they came from very different backgrounds, but were both pursuing careers in hip hop.  Anton was born in Russia to a musical father and they moved to the US in 1979 when he was 15. He learned piano and guitar, and soon started experimenting with engineering.  He learned bass and recorded and independently released an electro-funk album in 1985 under the name Intellectrics.  As a result, he was soon involved in the flourishing world of hip-hop and got a job at Power Play Studios in Queens, NY in 1989, working with up-and-comers like Main Source and Kool G Rap.  Traedonya was born in North Carolina but was mainly brought up in the Bronx, NY.  She was discovered at 13 by "King Of The Beats" Pumpkin when he heard her rapping.  He introduced her to Aaron Fuchs, who owned the hip hop label Tuff City, and she recorded a double single "The Boogaloo"/"Sixteen" for the label in 1987.  From there she started working with hip hop collective X-Clan.  And this is where their stories merge.  Anton was working at Power Play with influential hip hop producer Large Professor, who was also working with Traedonya.  Anton and his friend Curtis Watts were making jazzy funk music at the studio in their spare time, and Traedonya happened to pass by and like what she heard.  She soon wrote and sang lyrics to Anton's music and they had a demo.  Anton was friends with Elektra Records' Dante Ross, who asked to hear the demos and liked what he heard.  They were soon signed to the label.  They recorded and released their album, as well as the only single, "Another Lie", which was remixed by Large Professor.  The music was a big departure from their hip hop roots, focusing mostly on classic funk and jazz.  But neither single nor album sold much (around 70,000 albums, according to Anton), and the label decided to drop them before they could complete a second album.  They sued the label and ended up winning back their masters and the budget for the second album.  After that Anton moved to California and has kept producing and engineering for major acts, even winning two Grammys, one in 1999 for Santana's Supernatural and one in 2004 for Ozomatli's Street Signs.  Traedonya went to college in New York to get her Fine Arts degree in jazz music and studied with some of the masters of the genre.  She also released some funky solo singles like "Naked Gun" in 1999, "Beloved" in 2003 and "I'll Give It 2 U" in 2009.  It was announced that an EP entitled High Fructose Corn Syrup was to be released in 2013 (and it was to include Sample This! tracks), as well as a new Sample This! album, but as far as I can tell both have yet to surface.  Follow Traedonya on her website and Facebook to find out if and when they are released.

Sari - Forever True (1993)

A couple of weeks ago Isle visitor Malik Jefferson inquired about an album called Forever True from 1993.  He failed to mention the artist, but I soon discovered that the artist was Sari.  I found a link to sample the album and after determining it was perfect for the Isle, I bought it for pennies on eBay.  Initially my search for info on the mysterious Sari came up empty.  However, luckily she co-wrote one of the songs on the album, "Faith", so when searching again today I found writing credits which included her last name Posner. Searching that name revealed that she later went by the moniker Bertha Blades (which she chose in honour of her grandmother).  The bio on Bertha Blades' website fails to mention her debut album Forever True, but it does reveal that she is from Brooklyn, New York, and toured NYC with her band.  She was discovered by a German music producer and moved to Germany to record, and also started her own production company.  In 2003 she moved to London and formed the writing and production duo The Lotus Effect with Australian producer Jack Guy.  They eventually migrated to Paris and recorded one album.  She continued to produce, write, record and perform in Europe until 2011, when she decided to return to New York to perform and record roots rock with the Bertha Blades Band.  While back in Paris to record the song "Toast To Freedom" with a host of other international artists for Amnesty International (which was released on May 3, 2012), "Bertha" got a call from blues guitarist Joe Louis Walker to join his touring band as a vocalist, and she is currently on tour with them.  In early October of 2012, Sari decided to revert to her real name of Sari Schorr, and she now has a website and Facebook page using that name, as well as a few recordings.  As for her long forgotten (both by the public and apparently Sari herself!) debut, it's a mix of dance-pop and ballads that showcase her classically trained voice.  It and a single, "You're All I Need Tonight", were released on indie Eagle Eye Records but went unnoticed.  But given her vocal training and apparent personal preference for jazz, blues and rock, it seems the course she is currently taking is a much better and more appropriate use of her vocal skills, and will ensure she is not overlooked again.

Charm - Atrophy (1993)

Since I have a spare moment, thought I'd throw in another quick post (thanks to Liz for the recent kick in the butt. ;)  I'd never heard of Charm until a few months ago when I heard his song "Butt Naked" on the amazing 'Bottom Feeders: Ass End Of The 90s' column on the Popdose site.  Every week Dave Steed features songs that made the Billboard Hot 100 but not the Top 40 in the 1990s.  There are so many songs I'd either intentionally or unintentionally forgotten about, and it's a weekly fave of mine to visit.  His 1980s version was even more amazing.  Anyway, Charm (New York native Phillip Falcone) made it to #91 on the Hot 100 in 1992.  While Steed loathes the song, I found it quite fun. It's like a lost C&C Music Factory track - hip-house with diva vocals.  So I immediately went online and found the album for very cheap and thought I'd take a chance.  Luckily the rest of the album follows suit, with many hip-house numbers surrounded by some more traditional hip hop songs and many interludes (as seems to be the custom with hip hop albums).  Charm released another similar sounding single, "I Love Music", but it failed to generate the same heat and it would appear Atlantic Records dropped him.  He seems to have kept busy since by primarily DJing, though I'm sure he's also dabbled in music making.  Should you wish to know more, feel free to add him as a friend on Facebook and hopefully he'll accept. ;)

Adventures Of Stevie V - Adventures Of Stevie V (1990) & Satisfy Me (1993) DOUBLE POST!!

It recently came to my attention that an act from the 1990's that I adored, Adventures Of Stevie V, released a second album.  I totally thought that they had only released one album and was thrilled to find out there was another, and when I saw some of the vocalists featured on it I had to have it ASAP.  After listening to it I realized that I MUST do a post on the group for y'all to enjoy.  The group was masterminded by Steve Vincent, a British producer and songwriter.  In the early 1980s he had been part of disco group Touchdown, who had a minor dance hit with "Ease Your Mind".  By the end of the decade he wanted to step into the spotlight and brought together singer Melody Washington and singer/songwriter Mick Walsh to form a semi-group, though Stevie was undoubtedly the act's core.  They signed to Mercury and their first single, "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)", was released at the end of 1989 and was indicative of the hip-house sound that was huge at the time, especially in the UK.  It became a massive hit in the UK, hitting #2 on the pop charts, and was also big in the US, where it was a #1 dance chart hit and also hit #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album was then released and followed a very similar formula.  In the UK, "Body Language" was released as the second single, and it reached #29 on the pop charts.  "Jealousy" was released as the next single, and though it only hit #58 on the UK pop charts, it was their second hit in the US, hitting #2 on the dance charts and just squeaking into the Billboard Hot 100 at #95 in 1991.  But they ran out of steam with their last single from the album, "That's The Way It Is", which failed to chart anywhere.  The members went their separate ways, and that's where I thought their story ended.  But Stevie managed to score a European album deal with WEA in 1993 and brought together an impressive roster of soul singers to take vocal turns on the album.  While former back-up singers Selandra Wright and Beverlei Brown took over most of the vocals duties, Stevie managed to get disco/funk divas Thelma Houston and Gwen Guthrie on a track each, and Ruby Turner on two tracks. The result is a much more diverse sound, though firmly entrenched in house.  The singles "Paradise" (featuring Wright) and "Push 2 The Limit" (featuring Brown) were released, but failed to hit anywhere.  At the same time Stevie was recording as part of Music & Mystery with Billy Osborne, which featured disco and soul legend Gwen McCrae.  They would go on to produce the album Girlfriend's Boyfriend for her in 1996, and also produced the only album by Isle postee Gee Morris.  Vincent decided to leave production behind for the most part and became a teacher of music technology at Bedford College in England.  But "Dirty Cash" lived on, as remixes of the song popped up in 1997 and "Dirty Cash (Money Talks) '97" hit #69 on the British pop charts, as well as the top of several dance charts worldwide.  Another remix popped up in 2004, and the British group Liberty X covered it for their last album in 2005.  Then in 2009, grime artist Dizzee Rascal sampled the song extensively in his song "Dirtee Cash", which reached #10 on the British charts and which he performed in a mash-up with Florence And The Machine's "You Got The Love" at the BRIT Awards.  The mash-up was subsequently released as a single entitled "You Got The Dirtee Love" and entered the British charts at #2..

The Poppies - Honeybee (1993)

This is another long ago request that I've had on my want list for some time. But I finally found it at a very good price and can now share it with ya'll! The Poppies were an American duo consisting of Liberty Martin and Clifford Lane. As with so many acts here, there is little info on them on the internet, but one article I managed to find indicated that another core member was producer Roger Greenawalt. He and Lane wanted to put together a mob of people to make up the band for performances and scouted constantly for new members. They essentially wanted the audience to be part of the show. This unique approach attracted the attention of Columbia Records, who signed them to an album deal. The lovely Martin, who is Penthouse creator Bob Guccione's goddaughter, became the main vocalist and focal point for the act. Their sound was very retro sixties with clear influences from acts like the Beatles. Comparable albums on the Isle would be those by The Point or Apollo Smile, sixties pop with a very synthy modern touch. If you dig those albums you should dig this. The act itself was then promoted as the duo of Martin and Lane. They released two singles, "She Is Revolution" and "That's What We'll Do", and also recorded a cover of The Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties". While overseas they got some notice, their sound wasn't embraced in North America and the project ended. Martin's whereabouts are unknown, but Lane continues to produce and has had success creating commercial jingles. Greenawalt has also continued producing and writing for other acts, a recent success being the amazing sister duo The Pierces. And furthering his love for the sixties sound, he is the man behind the strangely successful The Beatles Complete On Ukulele series, on which Clifford Lane did a version of "Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey".
