A dear cohort in trash pop, Maxwell K, was gracious enough to send me the link to Ana's debut, which he recently ripped from his cassette copy and thought I might like to share with you all. As I told him, Ana is a little off of my criteria for this blog, as she had two major label albums. But since they both flopped so fabulously, I'll allow her a place on here. LOL After garnering attention for her Jellybean remixed debut single "Shy Boys", she released this album to little fanfare. It is basically what I'd call Madonna-lite, very much like the Bianca and Hiroko albums posted here. Pure pop, if a little bland, and her vocals betray her youth. But hearing "Shy Boys" again is a thrill. She followed this up with the album "Body Language" (take THAT, Kylie!), working with the NKOTB crew, but that too flopped. And then she later resurfaced as...actually, for a much better overview of the lady and her oeuvre, look no further than her entry on the brilliant
Milk Carton Pop Stars.
**UPDATE - Thanks to another generous donor, Kabir, we have Ana's second album, Body Language, which is produced primarily by NKOTB svengali Maurice Starr but also features a couple tracks ("Everytime We Say Goodbye" & "Friendly") produced by Debbie Gibson, and a duet with Jordan Knight on "Angel Of Love". Thanks Kabir!!

Terrific! I loved "Shy Boys." Good to know that she's continued performing and recording, albeit under a new name.
ReplyDeleteI have this on CD....you should have told me. i'll make sure and send you the mp3s from the CD...
ReplyDeletethis is so fucking hot, "in this world of macho guys shy boys are my main attraction" THANK YOU BEST BLOG EVER its all about the old school pop respect your elders!!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Ana. She's such an amazing singer who never got the success she SHOULD HAVE gotten.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my blog entry on Ana on rare & obscure music. The blog is linked onto this website.
Ana is actually a one-hit wonder in Brazil, where the ballad "One More Night" (from her debut album) was featured in a TV soap opera. I think this song is spectacular, and it's outrageous that it didn't have the success it deserves.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Ana's second album is something I've long wanted to hear, since it has two Debbie Gibson songs. Turns out, they're really catchy and totally in line with what she was doing at that time. This album had a very brief moment in the spotlight during summer 1990. "Got to Tell Me Something" was featured in regular rotation on the US TV show "Dance Party USA." I should know -- I appeared on the show that summer and am pretty sure it was played the day I was there. -- Tony S.
ReplyDeleteThe duet Ana sang with Jordan Knight was called "Angel of Love". Great post! I really liked the second Ana album a lot.
