Now here is a pop wannabe that needs no introduction. As we all know, Tia Carrere (real name Althea Rae Janairo) is an 'accomplished' actress, most famous recently for her television show Relic Hunter. Before that, she was most known for being in the film Wayne's World, where she played a rock star and surprised many with actually being able to carry a tune. So, naturally, she then pursued a career in pop music. However, like many other actresses turned singers, her audience did not exactly support her pop career and it fizzled out quickly (in North America, at least - the album went platinum in the Philippines). Considering that her audience consisted mostly of horny straight men, it isn't really a surprise they didn't eat up her pop stylings. The album consists of mostly mid-tempo pop-funk tracks, a lot like the
Sofia Shinas album I posted, which makes sense as both were largely produced by Andres Levin and Camus Celli. It was also produced in part by David Gamson, who was part of Scritti Politti and also produced other pop wannabes like Nia Peeples and
Nick Scotti (another Isle postee). It is a nice enough album, but not spectacular enough to make Tia a pop star. That being said, fourteen years later she released her second album entitled
Hawaiiana, which was nominated for a 2007 Grammy for Best Hawaiian Music Album. More impressively, her follow-up, '
Ikena, ended up winning the Grammy in that same category the following year. And she won a second Grammy in the category in 2011 for her fourth album
Huana Ke Aloha. She has also returned to the spotlight on television, on the second season of
Dancing With The Stars in 2006 and the fifth edition of
Celebrity Apprentice in 2012.

I love Tia!!! I think she has a lovely voice. I'm surprised you didn't mention that the song "Surrender" was later recorded by Kylie Minogue. "And maybe someday...you and I will fall in a state of grace..."
ReplyDeleteI read in an interview years back that she was working on a follow-up, I wonder if it ever came out. Hmmmmm.....

ReplyDeleteTia released another album last year (2007) called "Hawaiiana". It was Hawaiian music, but it did contain two songs in english. Right now she's recording her third album, and it's going to be more 'mainstream' compared to Hawaiiana.
ReplyDeleteThe man is right - and she's become even more successful in msuic lol - The album was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award under the category Best Hawaiian Music Album.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty successful for this blog lol
I've been looking for this album for a while, unfortunately all the links are dead. Any chance for a re-up?
ReplyDeleteThank you! :D
