Who were Good Question? Well, that is a good question! All I can discover on them is that they were Sean and Marc Douglas, brothers from Philadelphia. In 1988 they were signed to Prince's Paisley Park label, though his involvement seems unlikely. More likely, Warner Bros., who partly funded and distributed the label and studio, or Prince's management, who signed acts to it without his knowledge, signed the duo in a bid to jump on the dance-pop bandwagon. The label had little success, and Good Question surely seemed like a no-brainer to get it some attention - two attractive black men with decent voices and peppy pop songs, a lot like the darlings of the time Milli Vanilli - though the music is more like The Jets or The Breakfast Club. How could it fail? But fail it did. They did manage a number one dance hit in Billboard with the Clivilles & Cole remix of their first single "Got A New Love" (an awesome remix indeed!). But the song only made it to number 86 on the Hot 100, and the follow-up single "Listen To Your Heart" was stillborn, as was their only album. So what became of Good Question? That again is a good question! Anyone have the answer?

Hi, Nasty G!
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but they reminded me a bit to another duo called Charles & Eddie. And, for me, that's impressive, 'cause I'm a HUGE fan of Charles & Eddie. I have their two albums, and I love those CDs.
The Good Question's debut is a lost gem. Thank you for share with us this record, Nasty G.
Take care.
Greetings from Chile,

ps: The video of "Girl From the Gutter", by Kina (I love her), is available on YouTube :)
Super Channel played New Love all the time back in 1989 - even then, they seemed cheesey to me, and I was a cheese lover!

ReplyDeleteA note for anyone with a surround sound system - despite predating QSound and other spacial audio technologies, this album sounds really good through a Dolby ProLogic II decoder!
