Infidels - Infidels (1991)

Molly Johnson has long been a fixture of the Canadian music scene. She began as a youth doing musicals in Toronto. She moved on to fronting a disco cover band, but soon wanted to record her own songs. She formed the new-wave funk band Alta Moda in 1979 with Norman Orenstein, and they performed for several years without a record contract, with Molly also delving into jazz/lounge singing to pay the bills. In 1987 they were signed to a major label and recorded one album, which spawned the awesome national hit "Julian". But thanks to poor sales and critical backlash, they were dropped. Molly and Norman continued to work together writing songs. They had several that they thought would be perfect for Canadian pop princess Candi (who will likely be featured here in the future!) and approached her label, I.R.S.. The label liked the songs so much they signed them as an act, and they renamed themselves Infidels. They had two nationally successful singles, "100 Watt Bulb" and "Celebrate". The sound was rockier than Alta Moda, sort of like a funkier Alannah Myles. In 1995 they recorded another album, but the label insisted that they change their name, as another band in the U.S. were using the same moniker. They refused and were dropped. (It has also been suggested that I.R.S.'s president, Miles Copeland, wanted to focus on his newest act, who was, funnily enough, Alannah Myles, and didn't want the competition.) It would take years for Molly to record again, but when she reemerged, it was as a jazz vocalist. She has since been very successful in this genre, and is also currently a radio host on the CBC.
