Lia - Lia (1988)

Looking at my last few posts, I noticed that 6 of the last 7 were all one-named divas. Perhaps this should be a lesson - use a last name if you want a lasting career! LOL Anyway, Lia is yet another of these single-monikered sisters. Only when searching for info on her for this post did I discover that her full name is Lia Grant. She burst on the scene in 1988 with her awesome song "Tell Me It's Not Too Late". Produced by Foster & McElroy, it was a dance funk scorcher, and a precursor to En Vogue's hit a few years later, "Hold On", which was also produced by Foster & McElroy. It remains one of my fave songs ever, especially as it had the same vibe as my ultimate fave from a year earlier, Madame X's "Just That Type Of Girl". It reached the top 40 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip Hop singles. The similar follow-up, "True Obsession", just squeaked into the top 50 of the same chart, while the ballad "Constantly" also made the top 100 of that chart (it was also later covered by Vanessa Williams, and seems to be treasured by many, at least from requests I've gotten for it). But that was the last we heard from the lady. My opinion is that if she had of had Foster & McElroy produce the whole album, she may have reached En Vogue levels of fame. But they only produced three tracks, and the rest of the album was not as exciting by far. Anyway, thanks once again to the magic of Myspace, she has resurfaced. She has been performing in the musical-play "My Brother Marvin", is working on new music, and looks fab to boot!

  2. Mannnn, I do REALLY appreciate this! I have been looking for her first (and ONLY) completed tracks for years! I have two of Lia's remix dance albums, "Tell Me It's Not Too Late" and "True Obsession", and the clubs I'd attended back in the day use to rocked them out. Lia had the potential to have gotten far in the music biz with a terrific, soulful voice way back in 1988. Oh, well. Perhaps, with the right bit of luck, she still can. Thanks again and take care!
